FAQs
The lever mechanism was invented in 1886 by Friedrich Soennecken, a German office supplies pioneer. It makes inserting and removing papers quick and easy, especially when dealing with large volumes. Fun fact: Soennecken also invented the hole punch – the ultimate office power couple!
A standard ring binder (with an 8 cm spine) can hold around 500 to 600 sheets, depending on the paper thickness. That’s about 2.5 kg of paper! If you’re storing thinner pages like bank statements, it could even reach over 800 sheets. Quite hefty – a full folder can weigh more than a laptop!
Yes, there is! The "ring binder throwing" competition sees participants hurling full binders as far as they can. This quirky sport, which started in Germany, aims to add a bit of fun to the humdrum of office life. The current world record? A whopping 20 metres!
That depends on the material! Cardboard folders are often made from recycled paper and are biodegradable, whereas plastic-coated ring binders are harder to recycle. However, many modern manufacturers are now producing sustainable options – some even use vegan adhesives for the binder mechanisms.
The idea of organising papers dates back to ancient times. The Romans used cloth or leather pouches to carry important documents. The modern ring binder as we know it was patented in 1886 – almost 140 years ago! Today, it’s either a symbol of organisation or chaos, depending on how full it is.

Folders for Organised Documents and Professional Storage

In daily life, we receive a lot of documents. Who hasn’t experienced opening the letterbox only to be flooded with important information from the health insurance company, the bank, insurers, or bills? Keeping track of all these documents, especially those essential for taxes, is often not easy and requires a well-thought-out organisational system.

Using folders can be very helpful. With a folder, you can file and organise your documents according to your preferences, making it simple to quickly and easily find important information.

Folders in various colours can be found affordably in this category. All our folders are high-quality products featuring a secure and practical lever mechanism with different perforation styles. Using folders allows you to file and archive numerous documents and papers in an easy, fast, and organised manner. Thanks to the wide range of colours, you can categorise your documents by priority using colour coding. For office use, folders with a spine width of 7 cm are ideal, as they almost always offer enough space for one subject area. The spine labels can be customised, enabling you to create your personal filing system. The quality of office products is reflected in their craftsmanship and premium materials.

Types of Folders and Their Differences

Not all folders are the same. In everyday language, we often use the term "folder" to describe all sorts of paper filing solutions. However, different file types for managing your documents have specific names and are suited to different situations.

The classic folder, often found in offices or used for personal documents, has existed in its current form since the late 19th century. It was developed and invented by notable figures Friedrich Soennecken and Louis Leitz. Leitz remains one of the most renowned office supply manufacturers to this day. In the 19th century, the folder was celebrated as a revolutionary invention, replacing the previously used stacks of paper that were merely tied together. A folder offered, and still offers, the significant advantage over paper stacks of being able to easily insert or remove documents as needed.

Folders are commonly found in the A4 size. They are also referred to as ring binders, school folders, or office folders. The classic folder is made from thick, sturdy cardboard and typically features a so-called finger hole on its spine. The lever mechanism inside, which consists of a small lever and two large rings, can hold up to 600 sheets of paper. Of course, smaller formats without a lever but with openable rings are also available. A multi-ring system with four rings can also be found on the market.

Folders protect your papers excellently from creases, dust, and moisture. The spines of folders are often labelled, so you always know what documents are stored inside.

We offer folders in various colours. Classic office colours include red, black, green, and blue. For children or school purposes, folders with appealing designs are also available, which are particularly suitable for younger users.

Besides ring binders, plastic wallets are also popular on the market, especially for school use. A plastic wallet can hold up to 250 sheets of A4 paper. The classic plastic wallet was developed in the late 19th century by Carl Gladitz, who wanted to create a flexible file that would still prevent paper from shifting or creasing.

Plastic wallets are commonly used in schools or universities. They use a two-hole metal filing mechanism, where a flexible strip holds the pages securely, providing high stability and long-term usability. Between the front and back covers of the plastic wallet, your documents and papers are well protected against dust, moisture, and dog-eared corners.

Plastic wallets are available in different materials: some are made of cardboard or plastic. A variety of colours is also available, making it easier to categorise your documents and papers. Plastic wallets are particularly useful for everyday use, such as in school or while travelling, as they are less bulky and lighter to carry than large ring binders.

Which Folders Should You Use in Everyday Life?

For your own paperwork, you may wonder: which ring binders do I actually need? Generally, it’s said that as an individual, you should maintain seven main folders. We at Bawowna.eu recommend the following:

  • Number One – Work and Career: in this folder, it’s best to create different subcategories. These should include certificates, employment and apprenticeship contracts, training documentation, payslips, and references.
  • Number Two – Vehicles: in this folder, file all relevant documents regarding your car. This includes vehicle papers, tax documents for the car, repair invoices, accident reports, breakdown cover documents, and MOT certificates.
  • Number Three – Taxes and Finances: arguably the most important folder in your personal archive. This should include subcategories like tax returns, tax identification numbers, tax assessments, account information, savings schemes, loans, stocks, and investments.
  • Number Four – Health: this folder should include categories for health insurance documents, vaccination and maternity records, international health insurance, care insurance, medical bills, and doctors' letters.
  • Number Five – Personal Documents: in this folder, sort all documents concerning yourself. This includes marriage and birth certificates, family records, passports, proof of residency, wills, patient directives, powers of attorney, and social insurance documents.
  • Number Six – Insurance: in this folder, organise everything related to your insurance policies. This includes all types of insurance contracts except car insurance, policy addendums, and pension insurance documents.
  • Number Seven – Housing and Property: here, file documents such as tenancy agreements, deposit receipts, utility bills, supply contracts, TV licence fee receipts, purchase receipts for appliances, property deeds, land registry extracts, and repair invoices.

If you have children, it’s a good idea to create a separate folder for each child. In this folder, file their birth certificate, vaccination record, school reports, and any other relevant documentation like membership details for sports clubs or similar activities.

A personal folder for hobbies and memberships can also be created in addition to the seven main folders.
